Dong Biwu

Dong Biwu (from 5th March, 1886 to 2nd April,1975),born in 1886, was one of founders of Chinese Communist Party. His former name was Dong Xiancong and another name was Dong Yongwei. He was known as Jie She and he also may be known by the pseudonym Bi Wu, from Huang’an (Hong’an now), Hubei province. He served as a deputy secretary of the central south bureau of CPC, a secretary of Chongqing working committee of CPC, Finance Minister of the central committee of CPC, a secretary of North China Bureau and a chairman of people’s government of North China. After the foundation of the country, he successively served as a director of Central Finance and Economics Committee, vice prime minister of Government Administration Council, director of political and legal committee of Government Administration Council, president of the supreme people’s court, vice chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, sectary of the compliance committee of the Central Committee of CPC,  and vice chairman and acting chairman of the People’s Republic of China. He worked as the vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Fourth National People’s Congress in January 1975, and the sixth central committee member of CPC, and member of the seventh, eighth, ninth Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and the Standing Committee member of the Tenth National People’s Congress.

Dong Biwu was born in a poor teacher’s home in Huang’an County (Hong’an County now), Hubei province on 5th March, 1886. He won a lowest scholar when he was eighteen and he supported Sun Yat-sen’s Democratic Revolutionary Programme as he was affected by a revolutionary group Daily Knowledge Group. He joined the Revolution of 1911 and Chinese Revolutionary League and worked in Wuchang military government. He went to a private university in Tokyo to study law in 1914 and had a meeting with Sun Yat-sen who seeked refuge in Japan. In a dangerous environment after the second revolutionary failure of opposing to Yuan shih-k’ai, he determinedly joined Chinese Revolutionary Party restarted by Sun Yat-sen. When he returned to the country in 1915, he launched military activities on crusading against Yuan and was arrested twice into prison. He continued to fight after he was released from prison. All these manifested a touch fighting spirit from a revolutionary democrat.
