Overview on Huanggang Dabieshan Geopark of Hubei

Located in the northeast of Hubei Province, on the southern foot of Dabie Mountains and on the north shore of in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, with a planning area of 2625.54 square kilometers, Huanggang Dabieshan Geopark of Hubei, from west to east, has two major parks, namelyGuifengshan Park and Main Peak Park of Dabieshan.

The orogenic movement triggered by convergence and collision of North China plate with Yangtze plate and the granite landform are registered as the two distinctive features of Dabieshan National Geopark in our City. In the Park, there are the outcroppings of root material of ancientorogenic belt formed 2.8 billion years ago, hailed as “root of Dabie Mountains”; meanwhile, there are the outcroppings of metamorphic rocks of high pressure, ultrahigh pressure and other lithological characters; moreover, perfect tectonic movement tracks have been preserved, whose typicality, rarity, systematicness and integrity are relatively rare in the country. In the Park and its surrounding areas, now, there are 3 world-level, 12 state-level and 19 province-level geological relic landscapes, which are of great value for geological research and tourism.

In August 2009, approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources, Huanggang Dabieshan Geopark was granted with the qualification of national geological park accompanied with a construction period of three years; in August and November of 2012, it successively passed the naming acceptance inspection organized by Bureau of Land and Resources of Hubei Province and the Ministry of Land and Resources respectively; at the end of December 2012, the Ministry of Land and Resources issued an official document to formally name it as a national geological park; in November 2013, our City held an entitling and opening ceremony for the geological park. In recent years, the geological park has successively managed to apply to be a “Popular Science Base of Land and Resources” and a “Popular Science Education Base of Hubei Province”; in September 2013, in the first national election of “China’s Most Beautiful Geological Parks” jointly held by Research Branch of Tourism Geology and Geological Park under Geological Society of China and Henan Geological Tourism Development Association, it ranked the top 30 and won the title of “China’s Most Beautiful Geological Park”.
