Red Culture of Huanggang City

As a famous old revolutionary base area, Huanggang has a glorious revolutionary tradition. In Huanggang, five important revolutionary forces, including the First Red Army, the Fifteenth Red Army, the Twenty-fifth Red Army, the Twenty-seventh Red Army and the Twenty-eighth Red Army, came into being in succession; to create a republic, 180,000 Huanggang people sacrificed their lives one after another. Hong’an County was the source of Huangma Uprising and the revolutionary base of Hubei-Henan-Anhui Soviet Area; the Red Fourth Front Army came into being exactly on river shoal in Qiliping of Hong’an. It is the hometown of Dong Biwu and Li Xiannian, two former presidents of the People’s Republic of China; it is the cradle of 223 generals of the People’s Republic of China, including Han Xianchu, Qin Jiwei, Chen Xilian, etc. During the revolutionary war years, for the sake of the ideal and the masses, numerous Hong’an patriots who took part in the vigorous revolutionary movement, in which they shed their blood and even lost their lives. Hong’an sacrificed lives of her 140,000 heroic people for the victory of Chinese revolution and it is ascertained that there are 22,552 registered martyrs. During the eventful years to create a republic, heroic people of Huanggang fertilized the Central Plains with blood, as well as forged with blood and life a spirit of “plainness, loyalty, bravery, persistence and endless struggle till victory wining” for the old revolutionary base area, leaving us a valuable spiritual wealth.

As the second largest revolutionary base only second to the Central Soviet Area, the old revolutionary base area of Dabie Mountains witnessed occurrence of many important events in the history of our Party and military: its “mineral deposits” of red resources are unique; actually, the Red Culture the largest and most fabulous card of Huanggang. Tested by times and wars, Huanggang left 802 red cultural heritages, registered as the important physical substances witnessing the democratic revolutionary course in modern and contemporary China; forged by Huanggang people with their blood and flesh, these red cultural heritages are of special historical value, political value, artistic value and social value, as well as are unparalleled and non-renewable precious resources.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, 52 Hong’an-born armymen were conferred with the title of Major General: Cheng Ruzhen, Han Weimin, Yuan Kefu, Jin Shibai, Luo Houfu, Li Shiyan, Geng Xixiang, Li Xifu, Zou Guohou, Xu Shaohua, He Jian, Xiong Yingtang, Cheng Yuechang, Yin Guohong, Lu Yanqiu, Zhang Tianshu, Zheng Guozhong, Kuang Yuchun, Qin Guangyuan, Chen Meizao, Li Dingzhuo, Jiang Bo, Liu Fusheng, Zhao Heting, Ma Zhongquan, Min Xuesheng, Dai Kelin, Dai Keming, Cheng Qiwen, Luo Yinghuai, Gan Sihe, Hu Zhengping, Wang Yunzu, He Deqing, Zhang Zhiyong, Tu Xidao, Zhang Jiecheng, Zhan Shaolian, Xie Zhengrong, Zhou Shizhong, Jiang Tengjiao, Gao Houliang, Xiao Yongyin, Xiao Yongzheng, Xiao Zhixian, Wu Shian, Wu Zhenting, Zhang Chaofu, Wu Ruiqing, He Huiyan, Huang Liqing, and Wu Jie.

Huang’an-born Generals: General Liu Huaqing, Lieutenant General Nie Fengzhi, Lieutenant General Wu Xian’en, Major General Gao Houliang, Major General Huang Liqing, Major General Xiao Yongyin, Major General Wu Shien, Major General Yan Guang, Major General Wu Linhuan, Major General Xiao De’ming, Major General Yao Yunliang, Major General Zhou Mingguo, Major General Xiao Zhixian and Major General Wu Ruiqing.

12 people had ever served as commander and political commissar in PLA Military Region. To be specific: Chen Xilian and Qin Jiwei had ever served as commander in Beijing Military Region; Chen Xilian had ever served as commander in Shenyang Military Region; Han Xianchu had ever served as commander in Fuzhou Military Region; Xie Fuzhi and Qin Jiwei had ever served as commander in Kunming Military Region; Han Xianchu had ever served as commander in Lanzhou Military Region; Wang Chenghan and Qin Jiwei had ever served as commander in Chengdu Military Region; Zhou Shizhong had ever served as commander in Wuhan Military Region; Xie Fuzhi and Qin Jiwei had ever served as political commissar in Beijing Military Region.

4 people had ever served as commander and political commissar in branches and services of the armed forces. To be specific: Chen Xilian had ever served as commander of the artillery; Wang Chenghan had ever served as political commissar of PLA Academy of Military Sciences; Xie Fuzhi had ever served both as commander and political commissar the People’s Armed Force; Li Tianhuan had ever served as political commissar in the Second Artillery Corps.

18 people had ever served as army commander. To be specific: Cheng Yuechang, the Army Commander of the 6th Army; Sun Yuqing, the Army Commander of the 9th Army; Wang Jinshan, the Army Commander of the 12th Army; Qin Jiwei, the Army Commander of the 15th Army; Liu Fei and Xiong Yingtang, the Army Commander of the 20th Army; Xiong Yingtang, the Army Commander of the 25th Army; Zhang Renchu, the Army Commander of the 26th Army; Yu Tianyun, the Army Commander of the 30th Army; Sun Yuqing and Yu Tianyun, the Army Commander of the 31st Army; Zhang Jiecheng, the Army Commander of the 39th Army; Han Xianchu, the Army Commander of the 40th Army; Zhan Caifang and Xie Zhengrong, the Army Commander of the 46th Army; Zhang Tianyun, the Army Commander of the 47th Army; Wang Chenghan, the Army Commander of the 60th Army.

11 people had ever served as army political commissar. To be specific: Zhou Chunquan and Wang Jian’an, the Army Political Commissar of the 4th Army; Zeng Chuanliu, the Army Political Commissar of the 9th Army; Wang Jinshan, the Army Political Commissar of the 12th Army; Chen Meizao, the Army Political Commissar of the 28th Army; Li Xiannian, the Army Political Commissar of the 30th Army; Zhan Caifang, Zhou Chunquan and Zeng Chuanliu, the Army Political Commissar of the 31st Army; Zhan Caifang, the Army Political Commissar of the 46th Army; Xu Binzhou, the Army Political Commissar of the 49th Army.

17 people of Hong’an County had also ever served as deputy commander and deputy political commissar in PLA Military Region; 24 people had ever held corps-level leadership positions; 100 people had ever held military positions of other provinces.

In September 1988, China restored its implementation of PLA military rank system. For more than ten years, the County once again has cultivated nearly 10 Generals of new generation for the People’s Republic of China, including Wu Xiaoheng, Huang Junfeng, Hu Xian’gui, Jiang Jianceng, Luo Yi, Qin Weijiang, Li Ping, Liu Xiaokun.
